Turkey (general)

Turkey can be a large domesticated bird (poultry) or a large wild game bird. They can weigh over 10 kgs (22lbs). The meat is darker than that of chicken and a properly cooked turkey produces tender succulent meat from the breast, legs and wings. Turkey is often the centre piece for major celebrations such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. While turkey can be cooked in many different ways, roast turkey is the most popular preparation. Each year for Thanksgiving there is a traditional Turkey pardon by the President of the USA at the White House. The origin of this tradition is not clearly defined. It is thought that Abraham Lincoln was the first president to grant a pardon to a turkey in 1863. Then in 1947, the National Turkey Federation gifted a turkey to President Harry Truman. It is unclear if this turkey was pardoned or appeared on the dinner table. Consistency of turkey pardoning (i.e. every year for a turkey pardon) is attributed to starting with either Ronald Reagan in 1987 or George H.W. Bush in 1989. This tradition may seem like gobblygook to many people.
